How God’s Word Can Change Your Life

Have you ever wondered why you should read God’s word? Or have you ever heard someone say that God’s word changed their life? Did you ever wonder what that meant? How could reading written words on a page change someone’s life? It can be really easy to not put much importance in God’s word and reading the Bible. However, God’s word is an awesome tool that does have the power to shape and change our attitudes, actions and desires.

Let’s take a look at what God has to say about His word.

Ephesians 6:7 – “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
This verse shows us how powerful God’s words really are. They are referred to as a sword. That shows us that His words have power. God’s words can literally change our heart, thoughts, and actions if we allow them access into our lives.

Matthew 4:4 – “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God”
This verse really paints a picture of the importance of God’s word. We shouldn’t just rely on the bread or food we eat each day, but we should also be living by putting God’s words into our hearts. God’s words are life to us.

So if God’s words are powerful and they have the ability to change our life, how do we get them into us? Think about it like food. Food is something that you make time for everyday. You usually eat roughly three times a day. You eat in the morning, you eat at noon and you eat at night. So there’s a set time each day that you eat. If you go to school, there’s probably a time when you are assigned to have lunch. So you know each day at 12:15, you should be heading to the cafeteria at school to get some food. It might not be the most delicious food, but its food none the less.

The same is true with God’s words. There should be a set time each day that you take to spend time in God’s word. It may be at night before bed. It could be in the early morning before you take a shower, or maybe during fourth period study hall. Find a time that you can be consistent about getting into God’s word. King David in the Bible took time to spend with God.

O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water. – Psalms 63:1

David spent time in the early morning with God. He had a set time that he spent with God. Getting into God’s word works best when you have a set time each day that you spend in God’s word. When you make the choice to spend time each day in God’s word, you’ll find that your thoughts, actions, and desires line up with God’s. God’s word really does have the power to change your life!

How To Make Better Decisions

devotion-for-teens-making-decisionsHave you ever made a really bad decision? Or maybe sometimes you just struggle with making a decision. Maybe you’re afraid to make the wrong choice and so its hard for you to commit to making a decision and stick with it. Making decisions can be tricky at times, but here’s a few thoughts that we think will help make the decision making process easier.

  • God wants to help. God wants to lead and guide His children into making good decisions. Whether its what car to buy, or who to date, God is interested in helping you make a good decision about that thing. So lean on His wisdom and include Him in the decision making process.
Those who are led by God’s Spirit are God’s children.” – Romans 8:14 (GNB)
  • Spend time with God. To really get to know God and get His take on your decisions, you’ve got to start by spending time hanging out with God. You get to know God better by reading the Bible and talking to God/praying. So invest the time now getting to know God so that when a time of decision comes, you’re ready to know and hear His voice.
  • Don’t get mad if you don’t get an answer right away. Its easy to pray about something and expect an answer right that second. Sometimes, the answer doesn’t always come right away. So don’t give up or back out on involving God in your decisions if you don’t hear anything right away. Choose to hang in there, knowing that God will always come through for you.
  • Balance God’s wisdom with other people’s wisdom. If God speaks to you about a decision always go with what God says, not what others say. However, if you haven’t really heard anything from God about a decision, its okay to ask other people for advice or help. Some decisions aren’t world altering, and so its totally fine to just lean on the advice, thoughts, or wisdom of others.

Making better decisions always starts by putting God and His word first in your life. If you’ll choose to always put those things first in your life, you’ll find that you’ll be making better decisions and living with less regret. Choose to always put God and the Bible first in your life!

How Reading Your Bible Is Like A Garden

Devotion for Teens on Reading The BIbleAs a kid I would help Mom weed the garden. I loved the fresh produce from the garden, but didn’t really realize that if we didn’t weed we wouldn’t eat the good stuff. Have you ever thought about your devotional time being like tending a garden?

Mar 4:18  And these are those being sown among thorns; such as hear the Word,
Mar 4:19  and the cares of this world, and the deceit of riches, and the lust about other things entering in, choke the Word, and it becomes unfruitful.

Everyday there are weeds- thorns- coming up in your mind. What are these weeds? They are distracting thoughts, they are worried thoughts, they are thoughts that deceive us about who we are and what we want, lusting after things rather than God

These thoughts choke the Word in our hearts and cause there not to be fruit or results from our time in the Word with God. It’s not the mere act of planting God’s Word in our mind – it’s concentrating on it like we would a garden ensuring the weeds don’t choke out the good seed. It’s pulling out by the roots those thoughts that don’t line up with God’s truth. It’s a daily thing to do and when done will allow the good seed to grow in our lives. So daily sow the Word of God and also pull out the weed-thoughts of doubt, distraction, worry, lust and deception and watch the garden grow!

Pray: Father, today I plant the good seed of Your Word in my heart. I also pay attention to thoughts that would distract, worry me, deceive me or take me from You and pull these out so they die. Your Word is producing fruit in me.

3 Reasons Why Reading Your Bible Is Like Brushing Your Teeth

Devotion for Teens on Reading Your BibleBrushing your teeth isn’t usually the highlight of your day, in fact, you might even sometime not want to brush them in order to get out the door earlier in the morning or to get to bed quicker at night. Even though brushing your teeth can feel like a chore sometimes, teeth brushing can teach us about reading the Bible. And hopefully, make reading the Bible seem a little less boring.

  1. Brushing should be a habit. Imagine if you only brushed your teeth once and never touched your toothbrush again. My guess is that you’d have some pretty gross teeth and stinky breath. Well, just like you shouldn’t brush your teeth only once, you shouldn’t read your Bible only once. The Bible is a book that you need to get into. You’re not going to get it all by reading it once.
“Never stop reading The Book of the Law he gave you. Day and night you must think about what it says. – Joshua 1:8 (CEV)
  2. Brushing keeps you fresh. Your breath gets just plain nasty if you don’t brush your teeth. That’s a lot like reading the Bible. Reading the Bible helps to keep us fresh. The Bible is filled with instruction, wisdom and guidance to keep us going strong through life. Getting into the Bible is a great way to encourage yourself and stay fresh in your walk with God.
  3. Brushing makes you feel better. Don’t you love that awesome clean feeling that you get after you brush your teeth? The same feeling is available to us when we read the Bible. The Bible will encourage us and make us feel better. Whether you’re going through a problem, need some healing, or just plain want to be encouraged, reading the Bible is your answer.

The Bible is a powerful book. It has the power to change the way you look at life and the way you feel. If you haven’t already, choose to make reading the Bible a habit. You’ll be glad you did.

Why The Old Testament Is Cool

youth-devotion-old-testament

It can be easy to skip over reading the Old Testament. It has like a million books, plus it can’t be cool because its got the name old in it, right?

Well, the Old Testament does have some pretty awesome things to offer, so check out our list of reasons why the Old Testament is still cool in our book:

  1. The Old Testament is what the New Testament is built on. – There are tons of quotes in the New Testament that link back to the Old. Plus, reading the Old Testament helps us understand what the New has to offer.
  2. Jesus Liked It – If Jesus used it, we can use it too. The New Testament wasn’t written when Jesus was on earth, so He used the Old Testament. In my book, if its good enough for the son of God, its probably good enough for us too.
  3. The Old Testament shows us Jesus and New Testament truths – The Old Testament shows us why we needed Jesus. It also shows us lots of great truths that help us understand the New Testament better.
  4. The stories are pretty sweet – Some of the stories in the Old Testament are just plain sweet! David killing a giant, the walls of Jericho falling down, and lots more. These stories are incredible and show us how great our God really is.

There are tons of reasons why the Old Testament is still cool. We’ve just threw out a few that we liked. When reading the Bible, make sure you take some time to read the Old Testament too. It can be a huge help to your relationship with God.
