For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. – Romans 3:23-24 (NIV)

Today’s Bible verse shows us that none of us are excused from sin. We were born sinners. There’s no amount of trying or working that would get us out of our sinful state. Also, there’s no way that your good could ever outweigh your bad. It’s impossible to come to the father except through Jesus. That’s the bad news.

The good news is that Jesus didn’t leave us there. He gave us His own righteousness as a free gift.

The starting place of receiving this gift is to first understand that we are a sinner and desperately need His grace. Salvation is only possible when one knows they are a sinner and they completely throw their trust on Jesus.

Today, if you haven’t experienced the saving power of Jesus in your life, you can. You simply have to ask Jesus to be the Lord of your life. He will come in and save you, cleanse you and make you like new. Then you simply live out of your new nature in Him. You’ll want to spend time talking to God and getting to know Him on a deeper level.

Knowing Him is the best thing that God offers. When you know Jesus, and love Him, your life has meaning and purpose. So today, choose to live for Him in everything you do.

Pray: Jesus, thank you for saving me from my sin. I choose today to live for you. I won’t let anything get in my way of knowing you in a deep and real way. In your name, Amen.

Daily Bible Verse and Devotion – Psalm 91:2

I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” – Psalm 91:2

I remember one time I went camping. Our shelter for the camping trip was a small tent. When we put it up, it was late at night, and I’m sure we missed a few steps during assembly. A few hours after we went to bed, we were awakened to loud thunder and heavy rain. Before we knew it, our bed, tent, sleeping bags, and clothing were soaked.

I sat there in the middle of the night wishing for a refuge or shelter. It was so cold and wet. I wanted nothing more for the night to be over and to be safe and dry. In life sometimes we face storms. Perhaps your parents split up, leaving you feeling confused and alone. Or maybe you feel that no one really gets you and you’re angry and hurt. Regardless of what difficulty you’re facing, the good news is that you’re not alone.

God is there to be your shelter and refuge in the storms of life. He wants to keep you safe and protect you from harm. So no matter how hard what you’re facing might seem you can be confident in God’s protection and love for you.

Daily Bible Verse and Devotion – Romans 12:11

Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically. – Romans 12:11 (NLT)

It’s so easy to get distracted. From getting engrossed in social media, video games, spending time with friends, or school work it’s so easy to get distracted and become detached from the things of God. Today’s Bible verse is a challenge to that. It tells us to live our lives wholeheartedly for God.

We are to work hard and serve God enthusiastically. Serving God shouldn’t be something we fit in on church day if we have the time or unless something better comes up. Serving God should be the way we live our lives.

And while technology and friends aren’t wrong, when we let them come in place of spending time with God, something is out of place. We should make serving God our priority and have fun doing it. It’s fun to bless someone in need. It’s fun to read the Bible and find an answer for a difficult situation that you’re facing. It’s fun to trust God and see Him come through for you. So purpose today to serve God wholeheartedly and enthusiastically.

 

Daily Bible Verse and Devotion – Acts 13:52

And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost. – Acts 13:52 (KJV)

The disciples had just experienced the leaders stirring up people against them. They had experienced people arguing against them and persecution.

If I was one of the disciples, I would have felt really discouraged. Here I am trying to do what God has called me to do and people are not being nice. They’re trying to run me out of the town. Talk about discouraging!

And yet, we’re told in Acts 13:52 that the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit. Isn’t that interesting? That you can have joy that isn’t depending on everything perfectly in your life. You can have joy that comes from the Holy Spirit. In fact, joy is one of the fruits of the spirit named in Galatians 5.

That joy that the Holy Spirit brings isn’t joy that depends on everything going right in our lives. Instead, it comes from Him. Joy that comes from knowing the Holy Spirit is lasting joy. It doesn’t change depending on how we are treated and how our circumstances are. Instead, it’s steady because its based on the Holy Spirit.

So challenge yourself to live with an attitude of joy. That doesn’t mean things are going perfectly in your life. It means that you base your joy based on knowing the Holy Spirit, not on people, circumstances or things. And that’s how the disciples could have joy even when things weren’t going well for them.

Daily Bible Verse and Devotion – Acts 13:1

Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. – Acts 13:1 (KJV)

I’ve probably read this verse multiple times in my life. However, the last time I read it, something really stuck out to me. It was this person named Manaen. Here was a person in the church at Antioch that grew up with Herod. What?

The same Herod who had John the Baptist beheaded? Yeah, that one. And Manaen who is named in this verse grew up with that same Herod. Isn’t that interesting? It makes me wonder what Manaen must have walked away from to follow Jesus.

There’s not a lot of information about Manaen, so I’m just imagining, but I’m thinking that if someone was brought up with someone powerful like Herod, chances are their family might have been wealthy and powerful too. Manaen might have given up a good career in Herod’s court to be at the church at Antioch. It’s pretty interesting to think about.

Regardless of all the details, Manaen must have counted knowing Jesus as worth it. He knew that nothing compared to knowing Christ and he found his purpose in life in following after the things of God.

Today’s Truth: Knowing Jesus is our greatest purpose in life.

How about you? Are you like Manaen? Are there things that you need to walk away from to follow Jesus? The truth is, Jesus doesn’t call us to give up everything to make our lives harder. Jesus calls us to follow Him because He loves us more than we love ourselves. Following after Jesus isn’t about trying harder, but rather living out of a relationship with your savior.

I’m sure that’s what Manaen did. Because of his relationship with Jesus, he decided that it was the only thing in his life worth pursing. So most likely, he moved from where he grew up to Antioch to serve Jesus. Manaen followed after Jesus because he knew his savior and counted knowing him most important of all.

Daily Devotion and Bible Verse – Proverbs 29:25

 Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the lord means safety. – Proverbs 29:25

How many times have you been guilty of fearing people? Maybe you don’t talk to certain people during lunch because you’re afraid of what others might think. Maybe you wear certain types of clothes so that people like you better. These are just two simple examples of fearing people.

Fearing people is something that we all do from time to time. However, if we give into the fear of what others think it will trap us. We can become afraid to take a risk, or afraid to do the right thing because we don’t know what someone else might think of us.

Instead of fearing others, we should be focused on trusting in God. Trusting in God will keep us safe and keep us doing the right thing. Choose today, regardless of how hard it might seem, to set fear aside and trust in God.

Today’s Truth: Choose to make trusting God a priority today!

Daily Bible Verse and Devotion – Romans 8:37

Yet even in the midst of all these things, we triumph over them all, for God has made us to be more than conquerors, and his demonstrated love is our glorious victory over everything! – Romans 8:37 (TPT)

Can you remember the last time someone hurt you? Maybe someone really let you down, and it has effected you. It’s easy to allow the hurt from others to trickle down into other areas of your life. For example, if you’ve been betrayed, it’s easy to take it out at your mom at home. You allow hurt in one area to trickle down into other areas of your life. Responding like this, however, isn’t healthy. It could cause you to destroy the relationships in your life that could be the support you need to get through this difficult time.

So, instead of taking your hurt out on others, consider what today’s Bible verse says. It tells us that in the midst of all these things, we triumph. That means we’re winners. You might look in the mirror and see someone you think is unloveable. But that’s not what God sees. When He looks at you, He sees someone that has value.

Truth: I choose my response when I’ve been hurt.

So today, realize this truth: you choose your response when you’re hurt. You can grab onto that hurt and allow it to destroy you.  Thinking about the hurt can cause you to hurt others, but you can choose to go to God instead. You can let Him be your comfort in times of hurt. You can go to Him and let the truth in the Bible become what is real to you.

God’s truth says you’re valuable. His truth is that you’re loved. So regardless of what people say or do to you, you can live in freedom. Why? Because you know that God loves you and sees you as a winner in Him.

Today’s Truth: God says that I’m valuable and loved, no matter what has been done to me.

Daily Devotion and Bible Verse – John 1:12

But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. – John 1:12 (NLT)

In many countries, citizens of that country have rights. In the United States of America if you’re arrested you are read your rights. You’re told you have the right to remain silent and the right to an attorney among other things. These rights mean that as a citizen of the country you’re entitled to certain things.

This Bible verse tells us that if we believe Jesus and accept Him we have the right to be children of God. That is a great right. Its awesome to know that we can be called God’s children. We don’t have to know God from a far. We can know Him personally because we are His children.

Today’s Truth: We don’t have to know God from a far. We can know Him personally because we are His children.

All we have to do to receive that right is to believe in Jesus and accept Him as our Lord. This verse really shows us how easy it is to become a child of God.

So as you go through today, take some time to be thankful that you have the right to be God’s child. It is great to know that we’ve been given that awesome right!

Daily Devotion with Bible Verse – August 8

So we, though we are a number of persons, are one body in Christ, and are dependent on one another – Romans 12:5 (BBE)

Sometimes we can feel like the people at church don’t get us. Maybe it’s the age difference or just that they seem so much different than us. However, if it’s a Bible believing church, the people there are significant and can play a special role in your life. This verse explains that when we come to Christ we are made part of a family. This family is now the “Body of Christ”. We are Jesus’ hands and feet.

When you are part of a body, you’re all dependent on another. When one member is hurting, the whole body is hurting. God created us to care for each other and be dependent on one another.

Even if you are much younger or feel different than those around you at your church. Just like you would take care of your own body by taking a shower, brushing your teeth and eating, volunteer at an upcoming outreach event or attend a small group. Meet others in your church and find out more how you can minister to them.

God often places you into your local church and He can use you to encourage and strengthen His body which is members of the Church.

Do you have those days when everything your mom and brother do simply drive you crazy? Maybe as hard as you try, your family continually irritates you. As a result, you’re constantly in a bad mood.

Do everything without complaining and arguing, – Philippians 2:14 (NLT)

Today’s Bible verse is a challenge for those days when everyone is making us mad. It’s for those days when everything your mom asks you to do feels like too much. And especially for those times when you just want to be left alone.

Yes, we have days when we just are struggling, but even on those bad days, it’s up to us to try to practice self-control when dealing with others. You can push yourself to have a good attitude even if the people who live at your house make you mad. There are times when even when you want to complain about a chore or argue with your brother that you can say no.

And while that isn’t always easy, it’s what we’re challenged to do. So today, determine to try to set aside arguing and complaining. Decide that you’ll drop the small things and try to have a good attitude as you go through life today.
