Daily Bible Verse and Devotion – Romans 6:12

Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. – Romans 6:12 (NIV)

Yesterday, we talked about the importance of considering ourselves dead to sin. To really walk in God’s best for our lives, it is important that we realize the person we were before Christ is dead. And now we are to walk in newness of life.

My grandfather died this fall. And as a dead man, he can’t do the things that he used to. If our family got word that after his death, he had opened a bank account or taken out a loan, we’d investigate. We might call the bank or get the police involved. Why? Because we know that a dead person shouldn’t be doing the things that he used to. We would assume that possibly someone was using his identity illegally.

The same is true for us. The person we were before Christ is dead. And as a result, the sinful things that we did before we met Jesus are dead and buried. And if we begin to do the things we used to before Christ, it should make us investigate. We should ask, why am I acting this way? I have died to my old nature and sinful things. I should be walking in newness of life.

Once we realize this, it helps us. We can realize that when we being to think and act the way we used to before Jesus, that we should stop. Instead, we should pray, ask the Holy Spirit to help empower us to live and walk in newness of life.

If you struggle with sin in an area, ask the Holy Spirit for help. The Bible tells us that He is the helper. Let Him help you overcome temptation and sin and walk empowered to live in newness of life.
