Daily Bible Verse and Devotion – Luke 10:40

But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made…” – Luke 10:40 (NIV)

Distractions seem pretty commonplace in our world. Our phones are always notifying us about something. The problems you’re facing at home or school take up space and attention in your mind. It’s probably safe to say that all of us are living pretty distracted by things most of the time.

In today’s verse, Martha is no different. She is bombarded by distractions. And the distractions she faced were not really bad things like sin. Instead, they were actually good things. She was trying to make food and take care of Jesus. And yet in the good things she was doing, she lost sight of what really mattered – spending time with Jesus.

It’s so easy to get like Martha – distracted and pulled away from Jesus. We don’t really even have to try to do it. All we have to do is get busy with the things of life. What takes effort is sitting at the feet of Jesus. Spending time with Him even when you feel the pull of the other things and people in your life.

It takes effort and intentionality to carve out time each day to spend with God. And yet, Jesus told Martha that doing that was the one thing that was needed a few verses later. So in the eyes of Jesus, spending time with Him was more important than getting things done.

Today’s Truth: Spending Time with Jesus is more important than getting things done.

That’s an important lesson for us too. This doesn’t mean that we are to be lazy in our studies or at our job. However, we do need to make sure that we make time for the most important thing in life – spending time with Jesus. That is what truly matters in life.

Pray: God help me to find time to spend with you each day. Help me to have the courage to tell the other things in my life asking for my attention no so that I can find time with you each day. Amen.
