Daily Bible Verse and Devotion – Jeremiah 10:10

But the Lord is the true God;
    he is the living God, the eternal King. – Jeremiah 10:10 (NIV)

How many things in our lives do we make important, but really aren’t living? For example, let’s say you’re really good at an instrument. You are a section leader at your school’s band. The students at your school respect you, and you are known for your good musical ability. Are any of these things wrong?

No. Not at all. It’s not wrong to be good at something. In fact, God has gifted us all differently. So you might be good at music, while a friend was created by God to be good at art. Where we often get into trouble is when we begin to magnify our talents or our abilities over God.

In the example of band, it might be that you’re trusting in your musical ability to get you into a really good college. Instead of saying, God my life is yours, I’ll do whatever you ask of me, you decide that you’re going to do everything in your ability to get into the right college on a great band scholarship. You don’t ask God, and you don’t give Him glory for the talents that He has given you. That’s when your gifting becomes like an idol in your life. Your gifts, your talents are from the living God.

Today’s Truth: Your gifts aren’t for your glory. They’re for God’s.

God is the living God who should get the credit and the praise for who He made you to be. So instead of using your gifts for your own gain and your own glory, seek God for the best use of them. Always give Him the glory when you do well. Seek His approval instead of the praise of others. When you do that, you’re giving Him, the living, eternal, true God the glory that He deserves.
