Halloween season is in full swing this year. The stores are packed with costumes and decorations. If you flip on the TV, you see lots of movies and TV shows that focus on haunted houses, ghosts, and lots of super creepy things. So with all the scary stuff on TV it can be really easy to become afraid.
Its a lot like someone who forgets to log out of their Twitter or Facebook account. The person gets up from a public computer, but totally forgets about logging out. Then the next person who sits down can see all of their stuff and if they wanted post things as them. You’ve probably seen the nicer posts when a friend or brother finds the computer logged in to Facebook and posts, “My brother is the greatest person I know”. Leaving a computer but forgetting to log out of your Facebook can be bad. When you do that, you are leaving the door wide open for anyone to come in and post whatever they want on you Facebook and read any private messages or conversations you had.
Forgetting to log out of Facebook is a lot like what can happen with fear during the Halloween season. There are lots of movies on TV that will try to freak the living snot out of you. If you spend lots of time watching them and thinking about them, its like you’re leaving the door wide open for fear to come and post whatever it wants in your life.
By thinking about scary things all the time, it makes them more real to you. It could make you be afraid to go to bed at night. Or make you afraid to go into dark places alone. Fear can really begin to torment you, if you let it.
And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise – Philippians 4:8 (NLT)
So this Halloween, challenge yourself to not leave the door open to fear. Don’t spent lots of time watching scary movies, going to cemeteries, or haunted houses. While those things can be fun, if you spend too much time thinking about them, it can leave the door open to fear in your life. Choose to not let fear rule in your life this Halloween. Choose to think good thoughts and not be a Halloweenie this Halloween.
