Daily Bible Verse and Devotion – Ephesians 1:4

God chose you

just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love

– Ephesians 1:4 (NKJV)

Do you remember Easter candy as a kid? I always remember opening Easter eggs and getting all kinds of candy that wasn’t really that good. As I opened eggs with jelly beans, I remember always being disappointed and hoping the next egg would have something good in it. You know, a tasty candy that I would have chosen.

There’s a difference between choosing something that you really want, and just getting something that’s ok. When it comes to the things of God, know that God really wanted you.

Today’s Truth: God Chose You!

God decided that before the world began He wanted a family. However, God is completely holy and blameless. The only way to have a relationship with Him is to also be holy and blameless. How does sinful man become part of this holy and blameless family of God? It can only happen through Jesus.

God knew this and planned it before the foundation of the world. Jesus died and rose again completely paying for all of the sins of the whole world. This means that anyone who believes in Jesus and confesses Him as Lord takes part in His holiness.

It’s only through placing our trust in Jesus that we can be part of this wonderful family of God. Now no matter who you are or what you’ve done, you are qualified to be a part of God’s family! Thank God for Jesus! It’s this message that shows us how special we are to God!

Daily Bible Verse and Devotion – Hebrews 6:19

Hebrews 6:19

We have this hope as an anchor for our lives, safe and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain. – Hebrews 6:19 (Holman)

What keeps you steady when things get tough? Where do you turn when life isn’t going like you planned? What keeps you going when you feel like you can’t make it anymore?

That thing that keeps you going when all else seems lost is hope. Hope keeps us going when we feel we can’t make it anymore. Hope keeps us moving forward towards our dreams and calling when we don’t feel like it.

[Tweet “Don’t lose your hope. Hope keeps you going when you feel you can’t make it. – @studentdevos”]

Hope is what keeps us steady. The good news is that as Christians, our hope is in Jesus. If our hope is in Jesus, we know that it can’t be shaken. So no matter how tough what you’re facing might seem, you can take comfort in the fact that your hope is secure. Jesus has your back.

Daily Bible Verse and Devotion – Jeremiah 29:11

“I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out—plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for” – Jeremiah 29:11 (MSG)

“What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?”

Remember when you were younger and people would ask you that? Maybe someone has even asked you that recently.

You’ve probably taken some aptitude tests to find out what you’re good at and what vocation you might be suited for. You may have dreamed about “what you wanted to be” both personally and professionally.

But wait. God has a plan for your life! Wouldn’t it make more sense to seek the Creator of the plan? Instead of asking, “What do I want to be?” maybe you should be asking, “Lord, what do You want me to be?“

Because God has crafted you for a specific plan, and He needs you to fulfill it. Believe that, and then seek Him about it. You might pray something like this: “Lord, thank You for leading me into my divine purpose. I will pray and read Your Word and trust You to speak to my heart, letting me know the direction I should go.”

Remember, you are the only “you” on the planet, and God needs you in your place! Thankfully, He knows the path that you should take. Believe Him to reveal it to you.

What’s really great is that God has uniquely equipped you for His plan. You were made to follow it. God’s been working on this plan for your life since before you were born (Ephesians 2:10). He has handcrafted you for good works. He set it up for you, and He believes you’ll do it. It’s your divine destiny.

Since He created the plan and He created you, doesn’t it make sense that He would want to lead you and guide you into it? Life is not a big guessing game, and God hasn’t overlooked you. There is a divine plan for your life — your job is just to find out what it is and walk in it. When you know that, you’re half way to making the right decisions for your life, because you’re seeking Him.

Daily Bible Verse and Devotion – 1 Samuel 17:45

See God As Bigger Than Your Limitations

David told the Philistine, “You come to me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of Armies, the God of the army of Israel, whom you have insulted. – 1 Samuel 17:45 (GW)

A lot of the time when we face a situation that seems huge, we look around and see all the reasons why we can’t. Maybe we think that we’re not smart enough, not equipped enough, or don’t have enough money. We see our limitation. And we magnify our weaknesses and shortcomings.

In the Bible, the army of God was faced with a situation that seemed much bigger than them. They felt too small and unequipped to handle the giant Goliath and his fighting skills. The neat thing about this story is how David viewed the situation. Where everyone in the army of God saw lack and limitation, David saw an opportunity for God’s strength.

Today’s Truth: God Is Bigger Than Your Limitations

In the story of David and Goliath, David chooses to side with God. He trusts that God is going to fight for Him. David’s choice to see possibility instead of limitation, caused God to come through for Him in a major way and win the battle.

Today, you might be facing a situation or problem that seems huge. Be encouraged. Just like David, you’ve got a God who loves you and who is fighting on your side. Determine to see problems as opportunities for God to move in your life.

Daily Bible Verse and Devotion – 1 Corinthians 15:10

Daily Bible Verse and Devotion On God's GraceBut by God’s grace I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not ineffective. However, I worked more than any of them, yet not I, but God’s grace that was with me. – 1 Corinthians 15:10

I remember always feeling like I didn’t fit in at school. For years I struggled with low self-esteem and thoughts of suicide. I overcame those feelings by spending lots of time reading the Bible and speaking the truth of God’s word over my life.

It’s easy to let the opinions of others influence how you feel about yourself. Sometimes that can lead to you feeling really good about yourself and other times it can make you feel really bad. Basing your worth on the opinions of others is not a good idea. It will always leave you with an unrealistic view of yourself.

Paul talked in today’s Bible verse about how he was who he was based on God’s grace. He viewed himself in light of what God’s grace said about him, not the opinions of others. If you base your worth on how others view you, it will always be unhealthy.

A good thing to do is base your self-esteem on how God sees you. Find verses in the Bible that speak to how God sees you through Jesus. When you do that, you’ll be much happier and fulfilled, because you know that God’s grace is what gives you your worth, not the opinions of others.

Daily Bible Verse and Devotion – 2 Timothy 2:22

Teen Devotion - 2 Timothy 2:22

Run from temptations that capture young people. Always do the right thing. Be faithful, loving, and easy to get along with. Worship with people whose hearts are pure. – 2 Timothy 2:22 (CEV)

It can be easy to get caught up in peer pressure. When you see your friends making bad decisions it can be really hard for you. You might feel pressured to go along with them, or not make good choices too.

Today’s Bible verse gives some good advice for those types of situations. It says run. Run from temptations. For example, if you know there’s going to be lots of drinking at a party, don’t go. Run from situations that might cause you to do the wrong thing.

Today’s Truth: Run From Temptation

Making the right choice might not always be the easiest thing to do, but in the long run, you’ll avoid a lot of heartbreak and bad decisions if you do. Remember too that you can win the fight against temptation. You’ve got the greater one living on the inside of you. He will help keep you strong in the midst of peer pressure if you’ll learn to rely on Him and His leading.

Daily Bible Verse and Devotion – Matthew 7:26

God's Word Over the Opinions of Others Icon

But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. – Matthew 7:26 (NIV)

Have you ever made a sand castle on the beach or at a park? Have you noticed that if you make one, and then come back a day later or even a few hours later, often the sand castle is gone? Maybe if you’re on the beach, the tide came up and washed over it. If you were at a park, a rain storm could have knocked it over or perhaps someone tore it down to build something else.

When you build out of sand, you know that what you’re building won’t last. Sand isn’t strong, and it doesn’t hold up to bad weather well.

Today’s Truth: God’s Word Over the Opinions of Others

In our lives, it’s easy to build the foundation for our lives on the opinions of others. Maybe we think something is wrong because all of our friends do. The problem with building our lives on things like these is that it’s not a solid foundation. The opinions of our friends might change. The things they might think are ok to do, might not be things that are actually right to do.

That’s why it’s wise to build your thinking and the foundation for your faith on something solid, God’s word. God’s word doesn’t change. It doesn’t adjust based on the opinions of others. It’s been true from the beginning and it’s still true today.

So challenge yourself to bring every thought, every teaching you hear, every thing your friends think is right and examine it against what the Bible says. By doing this, you’re building the foundation of your life on something that is good, strong, and unchanging, God’s Word.

Every Teenager’s Guide to Greater Confidence

We all would like to be more confident, wouldn’t we? What would it feel like to know you knew the right answers to the quiz at school? How would you feel if you knew what to say to your crush?

If we’re honest, confidence for many of us can feel like it’s lacking. Maybe you want to try out for the basketball team, but you wonder if you’ll crack under the pressure of the crowd watching you, so you don’t try out at all. How many times has a lack of confidence stopped you from doing something?

Where does confidence come from?

Where do you go to get confidence when you lack it? Does your confidence come from having the right clothes or the right friends? Is it from likes or followers? What determines how confident you feel on a day-to-day basis?

The Bible describes the person who builds their life or confidence on anything other than God’s word as someone who builds their life on the sand.

But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.  The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” – Matthew 7:26-27 (NIV)

When we build our confidence on superficial things such as the number of followers we have, or how popular we are, we are building our lives on the sand. When those followers follow someone else more interesting or funny, where will you go to get your confidence?

Instead, the Bible encourages us to build our confidence in Jesus.

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. – Matthew 7:24-25 (NIV)

When we build confidence in Jesus, we won’t be shaken by the things of life. When followers leave, you can remain confident because Jesus is the foundation for your confidence. When friends are fickle, you can know that you’re still loved because your confidence is in Jesus.

Jesus is a firm foundation, and when you build your confidence in Him, you are going to stand when the storms of life come your way.

Lasting Confidence is Found in Jesus

If you want confidence that will stand the test of time, then choose to root your confidence in Jesus. Go to your Bible and build confidence in who Jesus says you are. Building confidence through who Jesus says you are will stand the test of time.

being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. – Philippians 1:6 (NIV)

Jesus isn’t finished with you yet. He’s got good things in store for you, and wants to help you develop the confidence to step out and do those things.

Followers will come and go. Friends will leave you and clothes will change. However, one thing doesn’t change and that’s God’s word. So get to know the Jesus of the Bible and build confidence in Him. He is the one thing that won’t change or give up on you!

Daily Bible Verse and Devotion – Psalm 16:8

Psalm 16:8 Devotion

I keep my eyes always on the LORD. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. – Psalm 16:8

I can remember one time when I was driving my car. I dropped my phone and somehow it rolled to the passenger side of the car on the floor. I wanted to get the phone back, so I leaned over while driving. The next thing I knew, I was driving in the gravel on the side of the road. When I took my eyes off the road and began looking on the floor for my phone, my car started going in a direction that was no longer safe.

I didn’t get hurt and my car didn’t get hurt, but I learned an important lesson that day. I learned that you go where you look. The same principle is true in our spiritual lives as well. We go toward the things that we spend the most time looking at. Today’s Bible verse talks about keeping your eyes on the Lord. Why is keeping your eyes on the Lord important? Because in life you’ll go where you look. If you want to have a solid relationship with God and to avoid having your faith shaken, you need to keep your eyes on God.

[Tweet “If you want to avoid having your faith shaken, you need to keep your eyes on God – @studentdevos”]

As you keep your eyes on God, you find that you’re not swayed by relationships, hardships, or anything else that might steal your peace and joy. Keeping your eyes on God makes a huge difference in your life. So challenge yourself to not get distracted and off course by looking at all the stuff going on around you. Choose instead to keep focused on God and His goodness and see Him move in big ways in your life.

Daily Bible Verse and Devotion – Matthew 5:14

Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept.  – Matthew 5:14 (Message)

Have you ever noticed how hard it can be to share your faith with others? Maybe you want to tell a friend who has parents divorcing that you’ll pray for her, but you’re too scared that she might not like you. Or maybe you want to speak up when your friends make fun of another student who is a Christian, but you’re afraid they’ll make fun of you too.

It’s easy to want to hide your faith. Maybe you’re concerned that others will judge you or make fun of you for being a Christian. Today’s Bible verse challenges us to not keep God a secret. It takes guts to step out and share your faith with others. The good news is that often you’ll find that people really appreciate it, especially if they’re going through a difficult time in their lives. So challenge yourself to not be afraid to share your faith with others. Step out and pray for your friend that is hurting or invite the kid who sits by themselves at lunch to your youth group.
