Daily Bible Verse and Devotion – Isaiah 9:6

For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. – Isaiah 9:6

This Christmas season, challenge yourself to think about what Jesus is to you. He’s done many amazing things, but what is He to you? Is He your savior? Your friend? Today’s Bible verse outlines some of the great things about who Jesus is.

Don’t just glance over today’s Bible verse and not let it affect you. Jesus is so many things. He’s powerful, yet He’s a counselor when we need it. He’s everlasting, and yet He’s also the prince of peace. There’s so many things that Jesus is. So don’t just chalk Him up to savior, or friend and leave Him at that.

Ask Jesus to show you a new part of himself this Christmas season. Ask Him to make himself more real to you than ever before.

Daily Bible Verse and Devotion – 1 Corinthians 1:21

There are lots of people who think they’re wise. But as we learned yesterday, any wisdom or learning without Jesus, isn’t really true wisdom. Why? Because the world’s wisdom doesn’t know Jesus. And Jesus is the point of everything.

God’s wisdom is different from the world’s. The wisest people in the world are limited in their knowledge because they don’t know like God does. God knows how the world started and how it will end. He knows everything about everything. No human can do that. So God’s wisdom is better than the wisdom in the world.

Since God in his wisdom saw to it that the world would never know him through human wisdom, he has used our foolish preaching to save those who believe. – 1 Corinthians 1:21 (NLT)

God’s wisdom brought us Jesus. Jesus will save us, but we have to not rest in our own wisdom to receive salvation. Instead, we have to believe Jesus and what He has done.

What Jesus did can sound like foolishness if you really think about it. Why would someone choose to die on a cross? Why would that death be the payment for sin for all time? These things sound crazy if you think about them superficially. However, God is wiser than we will ever be. He knew what needed to happen to pay the price for sin.

And so God did what we would have never thought to do. He sent His own son to be the payment for sin. He sent His own son so that we could experience eternal life in Him.

Today’s Truth: The World’s Wisdom Doesn’t Know Jesus

Our job is to simply believe Him and what He has done. When we do, we are saved and can walk in the good life God has planned for us. So today, choose to not follow the wisdom the world gives. It can look enticing, but in the end, the wisdom of God is way better!

Have you ever been telling a story to someone and they didn’t get it? And after explaining it several times you ended up frustrated and misunderstood? I hate it when you try to tell someone something, and yet they totally miss the point of what you’re trying to say.

In the same way, many people today are missing the point as well. Many people live their lives for themselves. They attempt to explain the world without God. But any attempt to learn or explain the world without God are empty and totally miss the point.

So where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world’s brilliant debaters? God has made the wisdom of this world look foolish. – 1 Corinthians 1:20 (NLT)

Why? Because Jesus is the point of everything. Any learning, any success, anything you do without Jesus will be empty without God’s wisdom included in it. Instead of gaining simply knowledge, decide to gain God’s wisdom. Let the creator of the universe help you understand the things that confuse you. Make knowing Him your number

So today, realize that any attempts you make in learning, sports, or a job will be missing the point if you don’t include Jesus in them.

Have you ever watched a movie where it seemed like the bad guys were winning? Regardless of how the good guys tried, it seemed as if they were never going to win. Then at the end of the movie, the good guys end up coming up with a sneaky plan that tricked the bad guys and made it so the good guys won.

Today’s Bible verse reminds me a little of a movie plot like that.

The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God. – 1 Corinthians 1:18 (NLT)

It seemed as if the bad guy (devil/sin) had been winning for a long time. However, God had a plan. To the devil and the world it seemed like foolishness. But God’s plan was amazing. By sending Jesus, He made way for a permanent solution for sin.

The cross was the power of God. It was God’s way to deal with sin and all the things that bound us once and for all. And while it seemed for a moment that the devil had won, God had a plan from the beginning of time. It cost Him everything to send His son, but He did it because we were worth it to Him.

And while serving a God that would do such a thing might seem like foolishness to the people in the world, to believers, the cross is everything. It’s the symbol of our freedom in Christ.

Today’s Truth: We are free in Jesus!

So today, take some time to thank God for sending Jesus. In God’s wisdom, He sent Jesus the solution to our sin problem. Be grateful and thankful that you are free in Him!

Daily Bible Verse and Devotion – Isaiah 53:5

But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. – Isaiah 53:5

Today’s Bible verse paints a somber picture of what Jesus went through on the cross. It describes Him being beaten, crushed and whipped. Jesus went through all of this so that He could pay the price for our sins. This suffering was selfless, Jesus didn’t need to go to the cross for His sake. He did it out of love for you and me. And because of it, Jesus is the only way to be saved.

Jesus is the only way to be saved.

Because of the great love that Jesus had for us, we can now begin to love others and ourselves. As we begin to focus on how important we were to Jesus that He took beatings and whippings for our sake, we realize our true value. In the eyes of God, we are priceless. We should no longer look at ourselves and feel like we don’t measure up, or that we’re not important. God’s love proves our worth.

We also should treat others with respect because they are important to God. We realize the bullies, the outcasts and the popular students at our school are important. Not because of their social status, but because of how much God loves them.

Today’s Truth: God’s love for us proves our worth

Today challenge yourself to look at yourself and others differently. Instead of seeing all of the shortcomings, and failures, choose to look at people through God’s eyes. See the value He places on each individual and begin to treat others and yourself as God’s best.

Daily Bible Verse and Devotion – Matthew 6:20

Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. – Matthew 6:20

Today’s Bible verse made me think about Christmas time. How much of our energy is spent this season buying or getting the “right” gift? So much effort goes into our Christmas preparations. Do you ever wonder, why we try so hard to get something that will be outdated or boring before too long?

So much of our energy at Christmas time is spent in the pursuit of things that don’t last.

Today’s Bible verse tells us to not store up treasures on earth. Instead, we should store up treasures in heaven. So rather than living for yourself and what you can get, choose to do something different this Christmas.

If you have a friend who needs help offer it. When you see a need, meet it. If you have extra money, give it to your church to help them reach out to someone else in need. Mostly, just be open to let the light of Jesus shine through open doors all around you.

God wants to do something really exciting through you this Christmas season, if you’ll be willing to do what He asks you to do.

Daily Bible Verse with Devotion – Romans 10:3

For being ignorant of the righteousness of God and seeking to establish their own righteousness, they did not submit to the righteousness of God.
– Romans 10:3 (BLB)

Paul here is referring to the Jews in Jesus’ day. They were zealous for God but ignorant of how God wanted to make them righteous. They felt they needed to keep all the Old Testament laws in order to please God and therefore earn His righteousness. However, God’s plan was for them to submit to a new righteousness that would only take place by trusting in Jesus.

People fall into this trap today. Everyone has their own set of rules that makes them feel they earn points with God. When they do good, they feel they are able to be close to God and when they are not so good, they feel they cannot. These people are either out of touch or just ignorant of how God really makes a person righteous.

The only way one can be made right with God is by trusting in Jesus as their Savior and continuing to trust in what He has done is all we need to be right with God. We do not need to try and earn our way to God.

After trusting in Jesus and His righteousness, we can do good things for Him. However, we do good works because of what Jesus has done for us and not in order to be right with God.

Daily Bible Verse and Devotion – Matthew 7:12

Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.  – Matthew 7:12 (NLT)

What Jesus said here can be applied to so many parts of our lives. Have you ever had to deal with mean people at your church, school, or maybe even your home? If so, you can use this Bible verse.

When someone is being mean to you, you can use this verse. You can think, ‘how would I want them to treat me?’ If you see someone needing money, think about how you’d like to be treated if you didn’t have money. Then, consider if you could give them something to help out. If you’re in math class and you see a student that forgot their pencil, could you let them borrow one of yours? The possibilities are endless of how God could use you to help those around you.

Also, this verse can help you when you need to be bold to speak to others. It’s not always popular to tell someone the truth. However, in the long run, wouldn’t you rather have someone tell you the truth? If you’re heading down a destructive path, wouldn’t you like someone to have had the guts to possibly stand up to ridicule and say, “hey I know this is popular and everyone else is doing it, but this is hurting you and it’s not God’s best”.

Today’s Challenge: Think of ways you could apply this Bible verse in your life and pray that God would show you how you can treat others how you’d want to be treated.

Daily Bible Verse and Devotion – Romans 6:6

During Christmas, we can easily begin to get excited about all the stuff we’re getting under the tree. We can make sure that grandma knows exactly what we want so that we get all the right presents. But in all the Holiday concerts, lights, and gift-giving, it’s important not to forget that Christmas is all about Jesus.

Jesus came to the earth so that we could live in freedom from sin.

We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. – Romans 6:6 (NLT)

Today, remember that your freedom is found in Jesus. You are no longer bound by sin. That’s true even if you don’t feel free. Your freedom is based in what Jesus did, not in your feelings. So don’t believe the lie that you’re not good enough, or that your sin is too big. In Jesus, you are free from sin – fully and completely.

Spend some time today dwelling on the fact that Jesus is your freedom.

Daily Bible Verse and Devotion – Acts 17:28

Much of the time, we can wonder our purpose. Why are we here. What are we created to do?

You’ve probably wondered that from time to time. You might have questioned God’s plan for your life. It’s possible that you’ve pondered what you would do when you became an adult and wondered what it was that God had in store for you.

The truth is whether God had a big thing for you to do, or a small thing for you to do, life will be happier when you find your purpose in Him.

For in him we live and move and exist. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ – Acts 17:28 (NLT)

It’s in Jesus that we live. It’s in Him that we exist and find our purpose and reason for life. So today, be sure to look to Him. Know that it’s in Him that we find who we were created to be.

Regardless of whether you do something big or something small with your life, it’s important to remember that your main purpose is to have a relationship with God. So regardless of what you do in life, know that it’s all about Jesus and knowing Him. With that as your goal, you’ll see that you can do great things for God in your life.
