A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped – Mark 4:37 (NIV)
Have you ever noticed that the storms of life don’t usually give you much warning? The disciples most likely didn’t realize that they were going to be caught in a storm. If they did, they probably wouldn’t have left the shore. Storms come up in life often unexpectedly.
In this passage Jesus is asleep in the boat. He is seemingly not upset at all by the events of the storm. In contrast, we see the disciples scared and thinking they were going to die.
Isn’t it interesting how different their reactions were to the same circumstance?
I think reacting like the disciples is easier. It’s easier to look at the circumstances and the trouble going on around you and to feel like it’s hopeless. It’s easy to feel like your situation is just too big for God’s help. But the truth is, it’s not. You can be at peace even when it seems like all hope is lost. Why? Because you know the one who created the world.
That one who created the world won’t leave you helpless. He has an answer to every problem that you face. It’s just up to you to believe it and to choose to not lose your peace. Jesus calmed the storm in the end. The disciples weren’t lost or shipwrecked. Their answer was in the boat with them.
Instead of fearing, they could have been at peace. Did you realize that you have the answer to every problem you face living on the inside of you if you’ve asked Jesus to be your savior? That means you too can be at peace. Every problem you face, every helpless situation you encounter can be overcome because you have the answer, Jesus.
