Back to School Tip #8 – Choose Joy

Happy Teen

There are so many reasons to be upset right now. Maybe you’re at a new school. Perhaps your school isn’t meeting in person. For many people, this school year is a scary and uncertain time.

However, even in the middle of all the uncertainty, we can determine to practice joy. You can be full of joy even when it seems like nothing is going the way you want it to go.

You can choose joy in the middle of the storm, not because you’re so amazing, but because you know a God who is. God says He won’t leave you. He won’t forsake you. You’re not doing all this alone.

If you’re discouraged, take some time to see if you need to spend more time encouraging yourself in God’s word. Find scriptures that speak to what bothers you most about this year and write them out. Put them on your mirror or in a place you’ll see them each day. Feed on God’s word and choose to be full of joy this school year!

Back To School Tip #7 – Be Helpful

Teen Devotion be helpful

Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. – Phil 2:4 (NLT)

School is starting up, and you might not be all that excited. Maybe you’re schooling online and you’re dreading it. Or perhaps you’re meeting in person, but you know that you’ll be wearing masks and the idea of something itchy on your face is driving you crazy.

It’s easy with all the stuff that isn’t good happening right now to be selfish and upset. And of course that’s understandable. Your school year probably isn’t exactly what you had in mind.

However, if you want to have a great year this year, challenge yourself to be helpful. If you’re at home, see what you can do around the house to help out. Maybe you can start the dishwasher. Your mom would totally freak out.

Perhaps you can help the new kid figure out his locker combination, or help a teacher collect papers at the end of class.

As you practice being helpful, not only does it help others but it helps you too. You begin to take the focus off yourself and put it on others. That’s what God wants us to do as Christians. We should be looking for opportunities to do whatever we can to help others.

Back To School Tip #6 – Focus Matters

Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans. – Proverbs 16:3 (NIV)

To be successful at school, you’ve got to focus. What you put your focus on makes a huge difference. You might see students that get good grades and think, well, they’re just so smart. I’m not as smart as them, so I can’t get as good of grades.

In many cases, that’s not true. Often, getting good grades is more of doing the right things. For example, it might be doing an extra credit worksheet for math to bump up your grade. Sometimes, its just going to class and really paying attention instead of passing notes with your friends.

What you focus on matters if you want to do well academically. Often, your grades can be improved simply by paying attention in class and doing a few extra things.

The successful warrior is the average man, with laser-like focus. Bruce Lee

That quote is really true. Often successful people are just average people who really focus on getting better in an area. So if you’ve let yourself slip into getting just ok grades, ask yourself honestly if there are some areas where you could improve.

Finally, ask God, if there are any areas where you could put in a little more focus and see good results. God wants to help guide you into success this school year.

Back To School Tip #5 – Work Hard

Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically. – Romans 12:11 (NIV)

It’s fun to sit and scroll through your Instagram feed, or spend hours playing your favorite video game. If we’re honest, we’d all probably say we’d rather play games than work hard.

And there’s no denying games and social media are way more fun than hard work, don’t forget that hard work pays off in the long run.

Whatever you do, whether it’s your schoolwork, your job, or doing things around your house, don’t forget that there are benefits to working hard. As you develop a good work ethic now, it makes it easier for you to get a good job later.

The decisions you make each day about whether to do your best in your school work or to do your best at home or in your job are creating habits. Laziness now, will show up on your job later. It may cost you a promotion when you’re an adult. So today, challenge yourself to work hard at all you do. It will pay off in your habits as an adult.

Back to School Tip #3 – Look for Opportunity

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. – Galatians 6:2 (NIV)

This year has been a really difficult one. Most of us had no idea the effect that COVID would have on our world. And it’s easy to be so upset about how it’s inconvenienced our lives that we forget that others around us are hurting too.

So this year, as you go back to school, be sure to look for opportunities to help others.

Ask God to show you someone you could help or encourage. It might be a simple thing like asking someone to sit at your lunch table so they don’t have to eat alone. Don’t be afraid to go out of your way to help others.

As you look for ways to help others, it will end up bringing you joy. So be sure to look for ways to help others around you this year. It will help make your school year more fun for you too!

Back to School Tip #2 – Believe the Best

The LORD helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him – Psalm 37:40 (NIV)

Going back to school can be intimidating. Maybe you’re not that excited because you got the hard math teacher. Perhaps you’re upset because none of your friends are in your class.

Going back to school can be hard because there are a lot of unknowns. You’re not sure how the year will be and what will happen. Often unknowns lead to fear, or being upset about what’s to come.

That’s where believing the best comes in. You can pray and believe God that this year is going to be a good year for you. You can ask God to help you each step of the way.

Ask Him for wisdom to understand the hard subjects. Go to Him for help when you need friends. You’ll be amazed at how much God can help you this year if you’ll simply choose to believe the best.

God’s got good things in store for you this year. Trust Him and ask Him for His help and see how He will help you have a great year.

Is there something that you’re concerned about in the upcoming school year? Let us know in the comments, we’d love to pray for you about it!

Tips for Dealing With Stress

Life is busy. Each day you try to cram in school, sports, music, friends, family, job, and God. It can be quite the feat some days trying to balance all the things you do or should be doing. Most likely you’ve got pressure from your parents to do well in school, sports or music. You’ve got pressure from your friends to hang out with them, to dress a certain way, or maybe even act a certain way.

There’s lots of stress and pressures that come upon you each day. Stress is a part of life, but what are some ways that dealing with stress can be, well, less stressful?

Here’s a couple of suggestions for dealing with stress.

  • Rely on others. When you’re really overloaded with the pressures of life, its okay to ask for help. You can rely on others to help. It might be asking a friend to help you with your math homework. Maybe you could ask your brother to help you this week with your chores at home by walking your dog. Or perhaps you could ask your parents for some advice in managing all your tasks.
It doesn’t matter who you ask for help, just remember, you’re not alone. There are people in your life that can help share the load. Don’t be afraid to ask others for their help or advice.
  • Rely on God. God didn’t put you on the earth to figure it all out on your own. He’s willing and able to listen and wants you to share with Him what you’re going through. Don’t be afraid to get open and honest before God. Share with Him your thoughts and get His wisdom on how to deal with the stress in your life.
  • Remove the extra stuff. Many times, stress comes by simply committing to too many things. You might have volunteered for the winter dance committee, the basketball manager, and spending time mentoring younger kids. While all those things are great, you realistically don’t have time to do them all. You may have to say ‘no’ to a few things that you want to be a part of.  When you do, you’ll free up more time in the day to do the things that are really important.
  • Determine real pressure. Make sure that if you’re feeling stressed that the pressure you feel is real. Perhaps you feel stress because you feel like your parents want you to do better at soccer. This might not be the case. Your parents may not be putting any pressure on you to do better at soccer. This pressure is just in your head and in what you think they want you to do. You’ve got to learn to separate the real pressure from pressure that is in your head.
  • Communicate with others. If you’re stressed and you simply have too much to do, communicate with others about it. For example, if you’ve got a huge project due on Monday and a huge band concert that you have to practice for on Saturday, let your teachers know. Sometimes, if you’ve got a good track record with your teacher, they may let you turn in a project a day late. Its worth communicating with others to see if there is a solution to your situation.
  • Find stress relievers. Find out what helps you de-stress. It might be taking a long bath, reading a book, or taking a bike ride. Whatever it is, be sure to carve out a few minutes each week to do it. Finding things that help you relieve your stress is really important.

These are just a few tips to help you deal with stress. Life is stressful at times, but its great to know that when you’re feeling the pressure you can always go to God. God is always willing and able to help you with the pressures of life. He’s able to give you the wisdom you need to get through any tough situation. So no matter how stressed out you feel, take comfort in knowing that God is there for you and cares about everything that you’re going through.

Now to Him who is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us – Ephesians 3:20 HCSB
