Why Jesus Is Like Homework

Youth Devotion - Jesus HomeworkHomework isn’t usually thought of positively. Cheers never breaks out when the teacher assigns homework. In fact, the word itself usually brings feelings of stress, dread and maybe even makes you want to run for your life! However, homework does have a few good qualities.

One quality is that homework helps you learn. It reinforces what your teacher talked about in class. Homework helps you grow and learn more about the topics you’re studying in school.

That’s a lot like Jesus. See Jesus is into His followers learning things. In the gospels, He was always teaching, speaking in parables, and using examples. Here’s part of a story that Jesus used to teach the people.

“Study this story of the farmer planting seed. When anyone hears news of the kingdom and doesn’t take it in, it just remains on the surface, and so the Evil One comes along and plucks it right out of that person’s heart. This is the seed the farmer scatters on the road…The seed cast on good earth is the person who hears and takes in the News, and then produces a harvest beyond his wildest dreams.”” – Matthew 13:18, 23

Jesus used this story to teach that just hearing the good news isn’t enough. To get something out of what Jesus taught, you have to do more than just hear it. You have to take it in and let it become a part of how you live.

The same is true about homework. Homework does you no good sitting forgotten in your locker. If you don’t pull out your homework and do it, it won’t help you learn.

So the next time you get homework at school, let it be a reminder of how it is like Jesus. It helps you learn, and it also only does you good when you do the work. In the same way, what Jesus taught helps you learn, but it only is powerful when it is used in your life every day.
